How This Tool Works
This tool uses established readability formulas to analyze your text:
- Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level: Measures how difficult a reading passage is based on sentence length and syllables per word.
- Gunning Fog Index: Estimates the years of formal education needed to understand the text on first reading.
- Reading Ease Score: Rates text on a 100-point scale (higher scores indicate easier reading).
The algorithms analyze:
- Average sentence length
- Average word length
- Syllable count per word
- Percentage of complex words
Precautions and Limitations
- These formulas work best with general English prose
- Technical/specialized vocabulary may affect accuracy
- Poetry and creative writing may not be accurately assessed
- Syllable counting is approximate (especially for complex words)
- Results should be used as guidelines, not absolute measures
